Education for democratic citizenship

In increasingly complex and challenging times, where finding orientation is essential but quick answers are often demanded, the need for democracy education has never been greater. Social media and AI-generated content blur the lines between truth and deception, while political dependencies and decision-making processes become harder to grasp. To address these challenges, effective and engaging methods are needed to foster democratic understanding among young people. VAL-YOU aims to contribute by equipping secondary school educators with practical tools and approaches to promote European values and empower students as active, informed citizens in a democratic society.

For teachers

The VAL-YOU project provides teachers with a unique resource to support democracy education and the promotion of European values in schools. The practical toolkit includes methods, teaching content, and strategies for different subjects and age groups, along with a serious game for students and related teaching materials. To further empower educators, the project will also offer training sessions and webinars to deepen their expertise in fostering democratic values.

For students

The VAL-YOU project delivers an engaging learning experience tailored to students’ realities, using visuals and language that resonate with their world. A serious game challenges them to make decisions and reflect critically on their choices. Covering key fields important for society, the game encourages active engagement with democratic values, helping students understand their impact on the world around them.

For school directors and administrations

Democracy education in schools can only develop its full potential if the school embraces it as a whole institution and there is no discrepancy between the values taught and those lived.

The VAL-YOU project provides resources for school directorates and administrations to strengthen democracy education as a whole-school effort. To ensure alignment between taught values and those lived within the institution, the project is developing an assessment tool to evaluate how far the school embodies democratic values and a collection of good practices to guide future improvements.
